Vancouver-based Teck Resources and Chile's Antofagasta are exploring a merger that would create one of the world's biggest copper producers, news agency Bloomberg reported on Monday.
Bloomberg said that Teck and Antofagasta had held early stage negotitions and that any agreement hinges on the approval of the families that control both miners, Bloomberg said.
Teck's stock jumped nearly 15% to C$20.06 on the news, affording the company a $11.5 billion market value. London-listed Antofagasta gained earlier on the back of a stronger copper price.
