Everyone talks about #Lithium, but many forget #Graphite, when talking about #EV’s

In 2022, the lithium-ion battery anode market became the biggest end-market for natural flake graphite.

Demand for anodes grew by 46% in 2022, compared to a 14% growth in supply for flake graphite.

In 2022 prices for -100 mesh flake graphite rose by 25%, a trend which Benchmark anticipates to continue into 2023 on the back of incremental supply-side expansions in comparison to surging demand from the anode sector.

#Tesla co-founder JB Straubel’s @RedwoodMat-erials #Battery recycling #startup raises $ 700MM to upend #EV supply chain

JB Straubel’s ambitious battery recycling start-up Redwood Materials has raised more than $700m in a funding round as it seeks to upend the US supply chain for electric vehicles.

The fundraising, which is more than six times bigger than the electric carmaker achieved in its first six equity rounds combined, values the start-up at $3.7bn, according to two people familiar with the matter. Redwood declined to comment on the valuation.

The Nevada-based company’s ultimate aim is to create a “closed-loop supply chain for electric vehicles” in the US, with the renewal and re-use of car battery materials eliminating the need for the environmentally damaging process of mining for new raw ingredients.

CRU: China Plans to Come from Behind to Win the Global Battery Recycling Industry, Thanks to New Policies

LONDON, Dec. 2, 2019
/PRNewswire/ -- Lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling is hardly new in
the developed world, with notable industry players and well-established
regulations in place to process the countless 3-cell batteries reaching
the scrap-heap each day from portable electronics.

China plans to come from behind to win the global battery recycling industry, thanks to new policies
However,
the lack of explicit regulations (EU excluded) and integral recycling
networks for the nascent secondary market of electric vehicle (xEV)
batteries means that the playing field has once again been levelled; and
China is positioning itself to capitalize on the opportunity.

Are proper regulations in place in China?

China is the world's largest
consumer of xEVs, representing 30% of global sales in 2018, and this
share is expected to double by 2030.

#EV's: Electric-Car Dreams Could Fall a #Nickel Short

There is a risk a long-term surge fueled by electric vehicles could again drive innovation and bring nickel down to earth. Still, many miners and analysts are skeptical on the options for swapping out
nickel, at least for the next decade or so.

Global producers of electric cars have big ambitions and a bigger problem: Supplies of a key material, nickel, are lacking.
